On the Thursday and Friday, Monday and Tuesday surrounding the weekend of Palm Sunday (and our trek to Mt. Longonot crater and Kibera), I was delighted to serve as "nurse" again for the wellness check-ups that Dr. Dan performs twice annually. It was his last hands-on commitment to the orphans, staff, and Mamas before packing up to head back to the states for family reasons.
It was particularly fun because most of the kids were healthy and growing nicely. We weighed, measured, examined, and immunized the healthy ones. Others were treated for the green crud (ugh, still going around the campus noses even now!) with antibiotics, antihistamine, cough syrup, and/or ibuprofen, if needed. Although some cried when immunized, my absolute favorite was Munythia. As I held his arm and looked into his eyes while Dr. Dan poked his other arm with the needle, he beamed a beautiful smile back at me. I believe he actually laughed! I couldn't believe it. I thought for sure he would cry for the next shot in his thigh, but NO! He laughed again! I will try to find a photo of Munythia, and feature him along with some other kids I've grown so attached to, in a later entry. You will see photos of Tamara and Paul helping out with this project, too.
All went smoothly in general. We sure miss Dr. Dan. I pray that another Doctor will commit to moving here soon. We employ about 50 Kenyans, have now taken in 79 orphans, have a dozen or so missionaries, and 17 day students. It sure would help to have onsite health care...
